Oral Sedation

Every effort is made to ensure the comfort and wellbeing of our patients; however, we understand when extra support is needed. For patients feeling especially nervous about their upcoming treatment with us, we offer dental sedation to keep their fears and anxieties under control.

With sedation, patients can get through their appointment without experiencing the fear and discomfort that may be associated with longer or more invasive procedures. At our practice, we offer both nitrous oxide and oral sedation to our patients. Patients that want to learn more about sedation dentistry are invited to call our office in Lacey, WA today to learn more!

What is Nitrous Oxide?

Nitrous oxide is a breathable form of sedation that is administered through a breathing mask fit over the patient’s nose. As the patient inhales, the sedative begins taking effect immediately. One of the great qualities of nitrous oxide is the ability of the sedation to work so quickly, but also cause no lingering effects. This makes it possible for kids to return to school and adults to return to work as soon as their treatment is complete.

How Does it Help?

Nitrogen oxide has significant uses in standard medical practices as well as dentistry. The gas causes a joyful, relaxing, and warm effect that makes patients feel peaceful and relaxed without becoming sleepy.

What is Oral Sedation?

Oral sedation is a type of sedative that is generally prescribed by the treating doctor a day prior to the procedure. The sedative is taken as a pill, usually an hour before the patient’s appointment to allow time for the medication to take full effect. Oral sedation is a safe and reliable option that may be used to make a patient’s experience in the dentist’s office more comfortable.

How Does it Help?

An oral sedative is a moderate level of sedation that often causes patients to drift to a  sleep-like state during their procedure. This allows the dentist to perform their work and complete the procedure without the patient feeling uncomfortable. Even when patients remain awake, they often report feeling sleepy and relaxed while being able to respond and communicate with the dentist. The sedative may also cause an amnesiac effect so that the patient does not remember the procedure after leaving the office.

Because this medication causes excessive drowsiness, patients must make arrangements to have a friend or family member drive them to and from this appointment.
